The most important part of home renovation is the hard finishes, and tiles are a critical component. Their quality determines how comfortable your living experience will be-never skimp and choose inferior tiles, or you'll face major issues later.

So, how do you distinguish good tiles from bad when they arrive? This guide shares 5 key points for selecting tiles and what to watch out for.

【1】Friction Coefficient

The friction coefficient of tiles should be above 0.5-the higher the value, the better the slip resistance, even if oil or water gets on them. For bathrooms and kitchens, where humidity is high, aim for a friction coefficient around 0.7. Check the packaging for this specification.

【2】Thickness

Tiles should not be too thin-generally, 1 cm or more is ideal. Thinner tiles bear less pressure and are more prone to cracking. However, thicker isn't always better; choose based on actual needs. If unsure, bring a ruler to measure and avoid discrepancies.

【3】Flatness Error

The flatter the tile surface, the less likely it is to warp, improving durability. To test, stack two tiles face-to-face and back-to-back. The smaller the gap, the lower the flatness error, meaning the tiles are more even.

【4】Water Absorption Rate

The higher the water absorption rate, the lower the density and quality of the tile. Opt for tiles with a water absorption rate below 0.05%. To test, drop water on the surface-if it spreads slowly, the absorption rate is low.

【5】Hardness

Tile hardness depends on the material. Common types include:Glazed tiles,Polished tiles,Full-body stone tiles

How to tell them apart?

Full-body stone tiles: No obvious layering between the surface and side-consistent texture throughout.

Glazed/polished tiles: Visible separation between the base and surface layers.

By keeping these 5 factors in mind, you can confidently choose high-quality tiles that last. Don't just go for looks-performance matters!
